If you are looking for a place to ride trails, and have yet to experience the Wolf Pen Gap Complex near Mena, Arkansas, make plans to do so. Wolf Pen Gap offers riding opportunities for just about all skill levels in the beautiful Ouachita National Forest.
We spent about a week exploring the miles of looped trails, and still didn't see it all. The Wolf Pen ATV Campground ( www.wolfpenatv.com ), located just outside Mena, offers campsites (tent to full hook-ups) and cabins, and you can ride right out of the camp, onto the county roads that lead to the trails. Trails are clearly marked, from easy to more difficult to most difficult. Pay attention to them, and when you see one of the many signs stating: "Caution: Steep Sections Ahead, Skilled Riders Only," believe it! And don't think that just because you made it up one of them, the rest will be the same. Some of them are down-right insane! The photos will give you an idea of what it's like, although they often don't show the magnitude of some of the inclines. A few people were injured while we were there, including one Life Flighted, so if you decide to take the adventure, do so cautiously. We survived with only two minor roll-overs, no major injuries, and we had a great time. If you get a chance, check it out!
Wolf Pen Gap began in 1991 as a special trail complex formed to meet the demands for an Off Highway Vehicle area, according to the forest service. At that time, existing roads, some closed timber haul routes and some newly constructed trails were used to make up the trail complex. Thousands of people visit Wolf Pen Gap annually, with Spring Break and holidays being the busiest times.
