Little Sahara
June 2004
If you haven't rode the dunes at Little Sahara, located in Wynoka Oklahoma, you really should! We spent several days riding and still didn't cover all of it. One thing to remember, though, is that although the dunes can be lots of FUN, they can also be dangerous. Although it was our first time, we learned quickly and can offer a few words of caution to those who have yet to experience it:
1. Don't fly over the top of a dune without knowing how it drops. While some of them slope down, others drop 70' or so straight down, and if you come flying over it you might get an unpleasant surprise. People have died here.
2. Even when you know how it drops, if you plan to jump or race up one (or down) it's a good idea to have a spotter on the top so you don't hit head-on someone coming over the top (or bottom). Often people ride fast and hard on the dunes, and at least one person died in such a way there a few years back. Yes, you both have flags (can't get into the dunes w/out one), but it's hard to see a flag over the top of one of those tall dunes.
3. If you go out at night, and you should, stay in a familiar area or take a GPS. It's easy to get lost, especially when the sun goes down. It gets DARK, the dunes take on shadows, and you could ride around in circles for hours. We got lost every night, and only found our way back by finally finding and following the fence line most of the way. A GPS would work better.
4. Although glass bottles and alcohol are not allowed in the dunes (alcohol is allowed in the park and campground and people do party!), we found signs of both all over the place. Also saw pieces of barbed wire, fence posts, sticks, etc. partially buried in the sand, so watch your tires.
5. Watch out for the wildlife. We almost hit a deer, rabbits and ENORMOUS bullfrogs! Also heard cows make their way in.
We had a great time riding and camping at Little Sahara. Luckily, it rained each night, keeping the heat down and packing the sand just right for the next day. Of course, those camping in tents probably wouldn't agree. :) We ran stock tires, no paddles, and didn't have much of a problem, meaning a few of us only got stuck once and some not at all, but they do sell paddle tires at good prices on site. W really liked that we could not only ride our ATVs from camp to the dunes, but also to the showers, the main office, the ATV parts store, and even the convenience store/fuel station, which also sells race fuel and accessories and serves food. What more could you ask for? Wish more places were like that!!! Can't wait to go back!
